  HOMEOWNERS NEWSLETTER Winter 2001

"It looks like an old traditional
home that has been sitting on
the site for years. It has settled
in quite nicely."

To learn how you can design your own barn home, Order the Design Guide. The Yankee Barn Design Guide includes a three-ring binder with 175 pages of design ideas, color photographs, interviews with homeowners and custom plans.

Inside, the raised ceiling, antique beams, and
series of French doors opening onto the porch
create an old-world charm in this newly
constructed home."
"I looked at several companies and liked Yankee Barn best of the group. Everyone at Yankee Barn was very professional and nice to deal with."

"Yankee Barn also uses unique wood for their beams. I preferred the antique timbers over the new wood the other companies offered for their beams. It is beautiful wood with wonderful grain and is probably over 300 years old."

After a visit to the Yankee Barn show home in Grantham, New Hampshire, the homeowner started working with Bruce Parsons, one of the Yankee Barn designers. After reviewing the plans in the Yankee Barn Design Guide, he picked the East Hampton plan as a starting point in the design process. He liked the shingled, New England cape look with the wrap-around porch. (See Designer Notes: Porches and Pergolas.)
"The East Hampton plan fit what I had in mind. I might have come up with the same thing on my own, but having the plan to start from made it easier."

"The design went very quickly. We took the East Hampton plan, moved the garage, flipped the house around, and added an entry foyer. We added windows, took out doors, and raised the ceiling in the living room. We really only changed the details, not the basic structure."

"We only had three levels of revisions, all done by phone. Everything worked out perfectly."

"I was amazed at how fast it all happened. I made a trip to Yankee Barn in January. The design was completed by mid-February. The Yankee Barn package delivered in May and the house was up the following week, 95% finished by October."

The shingled exterior and wrap-around porch
help capture the traditional character of the area.

A dark stain for the beams was chosen and
set against the light walls to create a Tudor
look.

After the final plans were agreed to, construction began in the protected environment of the Yankee Barn shop.

Craftsmen in the frame shop cut, notched and finished the frame while several building crews constructed wall and roof panels, and prepared flooring, trim and options. The packages of frame, panels, and options were shipped by truck to the site for the barn raising.

"When the trucks arrived and unloaded, the site looked like a Yankee Barn lumber yard with all the packages placed around the site. Within a week, from the Yankee Barn lumber yard, there appeared a house."

The homeowner had experience in construction and was the general contractor. With the help of a Yankee Barn supervisor, the frame and panels went up quickly. Because the Yankee Barn panels arrive complete with windows, insulation, and finish, the barn raising was completed in one week and the homeowner moved inside to frame the interior. Though the pace of work slowed down juggling subcontractors, the homeowner is still amazed that he went from design in February to finished house in October.

A large kitchen island provides workspace and separates the cooking activities from the flow of the house.

"Plus I saved money. I could never have built this on site for the same cost. With everything pre-installed, I saved over buying locally and installing on site. It was reasonably priced compared to doing it yourself. Plus, I could never find the old wood that Yankee Barn has."

"Yankee Barn has always been there for us. Everyone was professional and helpful. On site, we needed windows and Yankee Barn delivered them right away. They were always there to answer my questions. They still call me to see how things are going." "If you drove up to the house, you would never know it started as packages. It looks like an old traditional home that has been sitting on the site for years. It has settled in quite nicely."

Instead of a cathedral ceiling in the living room, this Yankee Barn's 10' raised ceiling creates a feeling of space downstairs while allowing the use of the entire second floor to include guest room, den, and a master bedroom suite with master bath, walk-in closet, and private deck.

Jan's House of Hope, a 3100 square foot furnished and landscaped dream home, will be set on a barge to travel to several major ports of call on the East Coast during the summer of 2001. The goal of the project is to promote cancer awareness and raise $10 million for hospices and cancer awareness programs.

Yankee Barn Homes is proud to be a sponsor of Jan's House of Hope, a 3100 square foot dream house to promote cancer awareness.

Four years ago Yankee Barn Homes had a grand opening of their Show Home. Jan Rouleau, a friend and colleague, provided leadership and assistance to help the event have extra meaning by involving the American Cancer Society as a beneficiary. The event was a success, both as an open house, as well as a way to provide support for cancer awareness.

Recently Jan passed away after a two and a half-year battle with cancer. In dedication to Jan's memory, a unique undertaking has begun to promote cancer awareness. Beginning in the summer of 2001, a 3100 square foot furnished and landscaped dream home will be set on a barge and travel to several major ports on the East Coast. The house will begin its voyage in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, June 1 - 3.

At each stop on the tour, the house will be the site for a preview party and public tour. All proceeds raised at these receptions and public tours will be donated to hospices and cancer awareness programs in that port of call.

The National Cancer Awareness Foundation is a non-profit organization, which was formed to fund the project and tour. The Foundation is dedicated to raising $10 million to increase public awareness of cancer and supporting community hospice and awareness programs.

Please join Yankee Barn Homes in support of this project, dedicated to all who have battled cancer. Become a sponsor, volunteer at a port of call, or remember a loved one who battled cancer by adding their name to the website dedication page. Porches extend the living area of a home and come in a variety of styles from open decks to verandas to screened porches. This Yankee Barn combined a covered veranda wrapping around the house with a pergola. A pergola uses the framework of a roof, often seen with vines winding their way around the overhang. Because there is no roof deck, the pergola offers partial shade while maintaining the feeling of an open air deck. The homeowner chose Yankee Barn antique rough sawn beams for his pergola and has wisteria working its way around the framework.

For porches, Yankee Barn supplies an antique timber frame to match the rugged frame of the main house. If there are any walls on the porch, Yankee Barn supplies the same siding as on the main house. Porch ceilings come in a variety of styles. One favorite is the vaulted ceiling, sloping up as it follows the roofline. Often this ceiling has exposed supporting rafters or beams. Because porches can shade the living space inside the house, skylights or translucent panels can be installed in the porch roof to let in the light. For a more formal look, a flat ceiling can be installed below the porch roof made from painted v-jointed or beaded boards. For a three season living space, porches can be enclosed with removable glass panels. Generally the roof should be insulated by the builder or with insulated Yankee Barn panels.

The Gathering House is wonderful. The housekeeping couldn't be better and just about everything that one can imagine is provided. We very much enjoyed our stay. It was a great experience and an awesome way to demonstrate the product. I'd recommend the overnight to anyone interested in building a home. Our stay taught us things that we will and won't include when we build. - Joe
